Living Streets Association | 2024 April
Watson has seen considerable growth in the last 15 years, with several significant land releases and developments set to occur. This rapid population growth without the facilitation of social connections has created significant adverse impacts, including an increase in crime, a reduction of a sense of safety and security in the community, and decreased community well-being, particularly among new residents with no local social connections.

Between 2022 and 2024, 733 offences in Watson were reported to the police. WINNews reported on the recent crime wave that was impacting residents in the area, which made people feel less safe and some reported not being able to sleep.
In light of these issues, the WCA hosted a Watson Community Day in April to encourage everyone to build up friendships among neighbours. The event was supported by ACT Housing and the Watson SuperBarn Express, a sausage sizzle was cooked by the Majura Mountain Scouts Group, and ACT Policing officers were in attendance for people to chat with.

Politicians from various parties, Andrew Barr, Rachel Stephen-Smith, Elizabeth Lee, Shane Rattenbury, and Rebecca Vassarotti, were present at the community day. We appreciate that many of them also came to have a conversation with Living Streets about youth participation in block section 76 development.
The success of the event demonstrated people’s desire to connect with people and be each other’s support during difficult times. We look forward to the next community day!
